But that’s never really stopped me in the past now has it !
Let’s see – Lesson 5 was a good one, I didn’t and I’m glad (hold out to much hope that is). Apart from the pitch being flat and there being five thousand seats (and some grass banking) the game resembled something similar to my back garden (the park at the back of the house for those of you that don’t know) on a Sunday morning. The language was probably as bad but as they were swearing at each other in Arabic (if that is in fact what they were doing) it didn’t matter. I think it’s one of the few times that half time couldn’t come quickly enough for a group of spectators (I forgot to mention that when we four left at half time the overall number dropped by about 20% !). Still, we got back in plenty of time for tea !
Work wanders along at a pace here in Sleepy Town (my client has been on holiday for 2 weeks, has returned yesterday and announced that he’s in Dubai for 2 days at a conference and then running a course for 4 days next week – I can see him on Thursday ! Which, seeing as I have about three weeks of work for him to do isn’t very helpful, not that that will make a blind bit of difference to him (he’s a lovely man really, just very Arab !).
The problem with my client being away is that this was spotted by my great leader (who leaves on Thursday so I’ll be leaderless although I’m not sure I’ll actually notice) and that resulted in me being in Abu Dhabi for 3 days last week and I’m being roped in again on Wednesday and Thursday this week. That sort of suits me as I’m off to Dubai on Thursday evening to play golf on Friday and Saturday in some tournament or other – apparently my 18 handi cap will prove useful ! Time will tell I guess. Having 18 shots a round may sound good but when you haven’t picked up a club for about 10 weeks I’m guessing I’m going to need every one of them…..and then some !
But going into Abu Dhabi does give me the opportunity to address Lesson One though, and you can be sure that I won’t be making that mistake again !
Changing the subject completely – did I tell you that I only have 9 more sleeps until I see my family again ? They’re flying out a week tomorrow and getting here at stupid o’clock in the morning but I don’t care I’m into my 8th week now and I’m allowed to miss them a little bit. When they go back I’ll be about half way through my stint here (give or take the odd day), so you can all start to count down the days until my return.
Seeing as we are jumping about a bit, I could tell you about the weather here at the moment. It was lovely last week, hot with a light breeze but then there were sand storms across the whole region on Sunday. We thought it was miserable here (hazy with a bit of a harsh wind) but I saw some pictures on Facebook (and nicked them) from a friends of mine in Iraq who were generally in the eye of the storm so to speak and I thought you might like to see (or be reminded, for those of you that read my Iraq blog last year) what a real sandstorm looks like as it’s coming towards you – as I vividly remember !
Toodle pip everyone.

Hi Ian - galvanised by your accounts re: exercise, I've just staggered home from a 5 mile bike ride and am in need of a sit down (I have been told I was sitting down on my bike.........) Been thinking of you whilst I've been reading Terry Pratchett's Pyramids, you must let me know if you find any cracks in the desert.
ReplyDeleteLove from all - S
Thanks,
ReplyDeleteThey tell me it's good for you but I'm not convinced !
Cracks in the desert around here usually mean some venimous creepy crawly and should therefore be avoided at all costs ! I like Terry Pratchett !
Love to all and I hope lambing is going smoothly.
Ian
