I don’t really know why, I mean apart from the fact that I haven’t had a drink since Thursday, but then that’s not really a very grown up excuse is it ?
Today is supposed to be my exercise rest day, and I was looking forward to it yesterday cause I was aching all over from Friday’s circuit training, but at some point (which I can’t fix) today I seem to not be aching any more and full of energy. Anyway, the upshot was that I came back from work, jumped into my swimming uniform and took to the water before I could change my mind – 1000m later and I have just about got my breath back and stopped sweating, and dinner can’t come fast enough !
I’m feeling a bit full of myself generally at the moment and that usually comes before something bad, so I’m never quite sure whether to ride the happy wave or start to worry about what’s going to go wrong……..I guess it’s the glass half full/ half empty thing. I’m definitely a “who’s round is it then” sort of person – no good having a half full glass in front of you, there’s to much air getting at your wine !
I even politely turned down the bosses generous offer to travel 4 hours each way several times a week to sort out something in another city over here for no extra time or money……..that took some doing I can tell you – I got caught like that once before regarding Abu Dhabi and it took about 8 working days out of my programme and generally caused me some grief, not to mention having to buy my own dinner, I mean, how rude !
I have left the door slightly ajar though and offered to find someone to do the job for him and manage the whole thing – that way I can nip over there for a couple of nights, get someone to buy me dinner, have a look around Al Ain (look it up !) and not have the responsibility of actually clearing up the mess. I get work brownie points, friend brownie points and a nice warm feeling ! I told you I was feeling a bit full of myself !
It was very remiss of me not to wish you all a jolly happy and peaceful Easter. It’s sort of washed over us here. The Arabs don’t really notice it for obvious reasons so we get no extra holidays or anything (and as we’re even working on a Sunday anyway it’s even worse). The rest of the Chris tian world is taking an extra long break so there is only sporadic contact from the home land, and there’s not much point in chocolate when it’s 40 degrees outside ! The Thai and Indian (and Sri Lankan, and other) staff in the hotel did wish us a hearty Happy Easter at breakfast this morning, and I don’t think it was just because they were told to. I suspect with not much else to do when they’re not working and a long way from home in a strange country etc. and a good Chris tian up-bringing, it’s just what they do. Jolly good luck to them I say (there might be chocolate ice cream for dinner tonight……….)
So, to the inventory:
Money – AED 3 (and I had to borrow that from a colleague I met in the street because I was half way to the falafel shop on my own when I realised that I hadn’t picked up a bean when I left the hotel this morning)
Gym – no gym but 1000m swim (circuits tomorrow I think but I’ll have to sort out the timing as the bloody gym is full of bloody Italians from the power station across the road – at least that’s where I think they’re from. They take over the whole place and there’s only 3 of them……..it feels like 103 !)
Weather – clouds and 40+ degrees……..it’s like a pressure cooker at the moment, we need a bloody good storm to clear the air but I suspect the best we will get is the clouds blowing away and bright sunshine instead, which is not going to help the temperature !
Food – I had lamb chops and tandorri chicken for dinner last night, from the BBQ……….it was lovely ! I can’t remember if I mentioned the latest craving that has overtaken us here – the need for pork pie and English mustard ! We think we should be able to get a Pork Pie from either Waitrose in Dubai or from Spinney’s in Abu Dhabi . I have to go to the outskirts of Abu Dhabi on Thursday and may find myself making a 70 km detour into town just for a pork pie……don’t ever let anyone tell you I’m not dedicated !
Alcohol – Nothing since Thursday night but if only I can find a leader then the easily led may partake in a glass of the grape juice (still no luck with my international efforts to get it re-classified as one of my 5-a-day…..next stop, the European Court of Human Rights !)
Right, dinner beckons – night night all.
