Off the Wagon…….again…..

If I start with the inventory then you will know what I’m talking about……

Gym – a good 50 minutes of hard exercise (sounds ok so far…..)

Money – AED 3 for my falafel (and yes, I can eat falafels every day – to be honest, there’s not much choice otherwise.  We have tried the other eateries in town, well apart from the fried chicken place at the petrol station, and found them a little wanting to say the least)

Food – usual breakfast and lunch.  Then I went to the gym when I got home from work (as usual……..if you look very carefully you can just see my halo….).  After that it all went a bit haywire.  It was one of the guys birthdays here, and his wife is staying, and he had invited the usual suspects (the 3 or 4 of us that stay here at weekends) to a “pre-dinner drinks party” on the terrace outside his room.

Well, it got a bit messy from there what with red wine and Doritos (hey, we know how to live you know !), then up to a reserved table in the restaurant (which was exactly the same table as we usually sit at, with a reserved sign on it…..).  I then fell right off the diet wagon, which was probably as much to do with the need to eat something that wasn’t one of my five-a-day as it did to do with the pre-dinner bottle of red wine.

So deep fried food was partaken of (spring rolls and samosas), Suchi, bread, potatoes, chocolate brownies, Arabian sweets…….I hang my dietary head in shame. We then retired to the terrace for “post-dinner digestives”, which for me explains why I have a headache this morning……and the rest of my brandy has gone……..

So I’m sitting here at 7.30 0n a Friday morning (don’t forget that the weekend has started here before you all wail about the fact I never do any work), drinking a very nice cup of coffee (thank you again Mr B !) aching all over from my circuit training in the park with phyco, and my beasting in the gym last night, waiting for the gym to open so that I may go and punish myself for my dietary misdemeanours.  Whip myself with a wet lettuce, just to make sure that I never do it again !

Actually, the main reason for going to the gym early on a Friday morning is that I know that if I don’t then I’ll find any number of reasons not to all day, and there is little enough to do here at the weekend (which is why I like it) that to miss out on one of the big attractions would be simply foolish.  Plus I can sit around in the restaurant reading the paper and eating Danish (or French) pastries feeling pious and annoying all the other members of the “I should go to the gym more often” fraternity……I treat it as a form of entertainment – which is nice………

So that is the plan for the day – gym, long breakfast with to much coffee and to many calories, followed by some tanning (it’s another glorious day……), some T’ai Chi (I’m still reading the book and I think it’s about time to pull the curtains and have a go at some of the basics.  I should explain that a bit better I think – I’m not going to make a complete arse of myself in public….there, is that clear enough ?), a light lunch (liberated from the restaurant at breakfast time – see, don’t have falafels every day !) a little more sunbathing and reading, maybe some swimming, and then dinner and an early night so that we can start the whole thing all over again tomorrow !

It’s a busy, productive and fun filled day – which is how we like it ! (I might find time to try and squeeze a nap in at some point as well but I wouldn’t hold your breath !)

One last thing before I go (well, two actually), firstly a great big thank you to Auntie Sally for the book. Terry Pratchett is my favourite author and the book is surely the most appropriate that anyone could find – it certainly makes a pleasant change for someone to think of my intellectual capacity when buying presents for me (although it’s not unheard of – I’m still labouring through Thomas Mann……) rather than my bladder capacity…..although I don’t want this small fact to stop anyone buying me drinks……

Secondly (and definitely lastly for today because the gym is now open) – I have been meaning to pass on the news (for several weeks actually) that we have passed a 1000 page views, we’re actually up to 1,092 at the moment.  In case you don’t know what I’m talking about it means that somebody, somewhere, has opened one of my blogs 1,092 times.  So a massive thank you to everyone that’s reading (assuming you are reading), it sounds a bit cheesy but I wouldn’t do it unless you read it………
