In an unusual move I only wrote yesterdays blog this morning…..it might have been something to do with the travelling, or possibly having to open a bank account (money always makes me loose track of what I’m supposed to be doing……) or it could be the fact that I went to the pub at 6 because happy hour finished at 8……we may never know !
Anyway, I digress, the point I was trying to make was that this is the second days blog I have written today so you may have to make do with a few pictures rather than lots of writing.
You’ll be pleased to know that I found doughnuts this morning, and the off-licence (sadly that was shut until 4 so I will have to go back tomorrow). This afternoon I went with a colleague to Yas Island the home of the Yas Marine Circuit (where the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is held) for the opening round of the Australian V8 Supercar championship along with various other things including the Asian GP2 tour.
The first thing of note is the value of a AED 50 ticket. You get a free glossy programme, you get free water, you get to sit in any grandstand (although to be fair, not anywhere in the Grandstand – only in the scumbag seats), free earplugs, you get to take your kids under 12 in for free, your kids get entertained in all sorts of interesting and technical ways – for free, you get a free pitlane walk about, the place is spotlessly and there are more helpful staff than there are punters !
The pies are good as well ! (and only about £3, which for a Grand Prix circuit is a minor miracle)…….and so was the Thai Green Curry…..and Noodles……and chilli & salt chicken wings…….well, I was hungry and we didn’t get back to Abu Dhabi City until gone 8 so it was lunch and dinner…..
So here are some pictures:
This was the start of the GP2 race and if you look at the top right hand corner you will see an accident in the process of happening………
……and this is the aftermath !
This is the famous hotel built over the track (the cars pass under the “walkway” looking tube between the two sections of the hotel)
That’s the hotel in the background, with the whole of it’s glass covering glowing blue with various blue lights all over it – I’m not sure my photo really does this justice.
Anyway, back to reality. Today’s inventory:
Cigars: 2
Alcohol: 0
Money: Race tickets, taxis, pies etc, probably about AED 200.
Gym: Day off today but I promise to get back in there tomorrow. I’m going to the Abu Dhabi Marina Shopping Mall in the morning, and the beach, so I’ll have to get up and get on with it if I want to get back and watch the rugby…….busy day at the office……(I’m making the most of this weekend, and next, because they might be the last two in big cities for a while).
Weather: Warm again, the circuit said that the air temperature was 25.5 degrees and little breeze.
The photo of the day:
This is the Yas circuit paddock – those of you that have frequented motor racing paddocks throughout the world will struggle to believe this. There isn’t an lorry in sight (or anywhere to park one even if you had one) The buildings on the right are the teams accommodation and catering…….how will they manage without tents and BBQ’s ?
